Lubricity Improvers

Severe hydrotreating is required to produce diesel with lower sulfur content that burns cleaner with lower emissions, however the process also removes naturally occurring lubricating components in the fuel. A diesel fuel with no lubricating properties leads to wear and tear of critical engine components and possible vehicle failure. Nalco Water offers synthetic, acidic, and non-acidic lubricity improvers to help meet industry requirements for use in ultra-low sulfur diesel.

Nalco Water Acidic and Non-Acidic Lubricity Improvers Added to EI 1535 by the Energy Institute

In our continued effort to serve our customers globally with industry-recognized offerings, Nalco Water non-acidic lubricity improvers have been added to the EI 1535 Additive Listing (the minimum criteria to determine acceptability of additives for use in multi-product pipelines co-transporting jet fuel). These additional lubricity improver products complement our EI 1535 portfolio - which also includes our acid-based offerings - and provides our customers with a product choice to meet lubricity specification diesel fuel.
Nalco Water’s synthetic lubricity improver is engineered to help deliver robust wear protection across a wide range of fuel streams- even under the most demanding conditions in refinery and
terminal operations. Engineered for both protection and performance, our 100% synthetic lubricity improver is free from TOFA (Tall Oil Fatty Acid), plant-based esters, and plant-based or bio-based feedstocks and used in ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and other diesel fuels, including renewable diesel and renewable diesel blends.

Advantages of Nalco Water’s non-acidic and non-bio-derived synthetic lubricity improver include:

Reliability

  • Higher thermal stability compared to acidic and ester-based lubricity improvers

  • Arctic temperatures pumpability at -40 degrees Celsius

  • Oxidative resistance to help minimize degradation

  • Consistent performance across fuel types and operating conditions

Regulatory Compliance

  • Regulatory and compliance ready to meet global diesel lubricity standards without reliance on variable bio-sourced feedstocks
  • EPA registered
  • Rigorous no-harms test protocol

In heavily hydrotreated, ultra-low sulfur fuels, polar compounds which provide lubrication to engine components have been removed, leaving these components susceptible to wear and catastrophic failure. Acid lubricity improvers provide protection for these diesel engine components at a lower cost and with lower dosages than other types of lubricity additives. Additionally, stringent fuel regulations requiring lower sulfur content in fuels make lubricity improvers a critical additive to meet diesel specifications for lubricity.

Advantages of Nalco Water acidic lubricity improvers include:

  • Rigorous no-harms test protocol
  • EI 1535 approval*

*EI1535 approval applies to some chemistries, not all chemistries

Non-acidic lubricity improvers allow improved lubrication of hydrotreated diesel fuels to meet lower sulfur regulations. An advantage of non-acidic lubricity improvers over other additives is that they have
fewer potential harms issues.

Advantages of Nalco Water non-acidic lubricity improvers include:

  • Rigorous no-harms test protocol

  • EI 1535 approval*
