Mercury Re-emission Control for WFGD

MerControl 8034 and 8034 Plus technologies are polymeric, organic additive that specifically binds with mercury to reduce mercury re-emission across w-FGDs. The two technologies are liquid applications used to enhance mercury removal in w-FGD scrubbers resulting in reduced stack emissions. Both chemistries have been shown to lower overall mercury emissions as well as remove mercury from the w-FGD liquor, all without adversely affecting the w-FGD gypsum by-product. MerControl 8034 Plus, the second generation product, has demonstrated improved efficacy at lower dosages.

STORAGE TANKS
Storage tanks for MerControl 8034 and MerControl 8034 Plus should be constructed from FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) for volumes over 10,000 gallons. Smaller tanks can be made from FRP or polyethylene. Nalco recommends tanks be insulated and heat traced for weather protection.

PIPEWORK
Stainless steel piping is recommended for the MerControl 8034 and MerControl 8034 Plus applications.

PUMPS
Pumps are usually constructed of 316 stainless steel and Teflon® contact parts.

What is Mercury Re-Emission

Oxidized mercury is soluble in water and can be removed from the flue gas by the presence of a w-FGD. For certain w-FGDs, when oxidized mercury enters the scrubber it is reduced to elemental mercury which is not soluble, resulting in lower mercury capture efficiency and increased stack emissions. This phenomenon has been coined Mercury Re-emission and is defined as an increase in elemental mercury across the w-FGD scrubber.
